How does confidentiality work when my employer is paying for the coaching?
Absolute trust is required for coaching to be effective.
Discretion is important. As external coaches, we make that possible.
Clients need to feel absolutely confident that anything they share with their coach will remain between them and no one else.
It may or may not make sense to involve your employer.
Even in situations where a client’s employer is paying for the coaching, we put the client in charge of what is communicated and shared.
When a client’s manager is involved, three joint meetings are held (at the beginning, middle and end). The coaching client leads these meetings. They set the agenda, determine what they would like to learn and what they choose to share with their employer about the coaching progress.
When clients create their goals, they often choose to create two versions: one ‘official’ version to share with their sponsor and one ‘personal’ version shared only with their coach.
